Sydney CBD – SpacePod Project.

In November of 2022, Sydney’s tallest office building was finally completed. After almost three years of construction and a price tag exceeding $1.9 billion, the 55-floor superstructure is home to over 5,500 office workers spanning several corporations.

A few months prior to their move-in date, one of the incoming tenants approached OLG to assist in creating a simple but private meeting room solution that is unique to the layout and specifications of the project.

The Project Brief

Like many tenants in large office buildings, our customer didn’t have the luxury of being able to construct extra permanent walls for meeting rooms. For this reason, they wanted a versatile, semi-portable solution that could carry out various functions.

We were supplied with a completed floorplan (pictured below) and asked to supply five of our two-person SpacePod phone booths in three locations across the office.

Unique Challenges

Far from a standard install, our client requested two provisions to be included with their brand-new phone booths.

The first was the installation of a sprinkler system inside the phone booth. Traditionally, a phone booth of this size wouldn’t require independent fire protection; however, additional safety measures required plumbing extensions to the phone booth that needed to be fixed, taking away the semi-portable nature of the SpacePod.

The second provision was a little simpler. Our client had an integrated booking system that allowed its staff to schedule phone booths remotely for meetings. This system could be accessed via the staff’s email or on physical tablets mounted outside the SpacePod.  Custom mounting panels were affixed to the exterior shell to achieve this, taking special care not to disrupt the interior acoustic seal.

The Final Product

With the installation completed and their booking system tested, our client was thrilled with their five brand-new integrated SpacePods.

Their staff now had a democratised short-meeting-room system and a space to escape the stress and volume of the loud office floor.
